Sandra draws an abstract thing:5

This video shows more how to make it look like the animation is growing which is what I want, instead of having it jumpy with my hands in the animation. Definitely something that I would like to create, I think it needs a story though, it needs context. This is something that I want to work on!

Abstract stop motion drawing colour burst

http://youtu.be/7PC1XLk7680

I really want to combine my pattern love and create a more complicated and different animation, unlike my other idea of telling children's story. It would probably be easier to create because I don't need to change the paper everytime because I'm just adding to the image, not completely changing it every time!

Gulp the worlds largest stop-motion animation set, shot on a Nokia N8

http://youtu.be/ieN2vhslTTU

This is such a cool animation and if you watch it to the end, you can really see how big scale it is! Must have taken for ever! But it's really cool though, reminds me to remember to be inventive with what I'm creating think outside the box, and think if it's a good idea and will work well and is doable.

What on Earth?: Einstein and the Honey Bee (Lucy Clash)

http://youtu.be/Q2mRi88vqZs

This is my favourite animation, which Thomas Kowler helped create, so etching I would love to create, it clean and informative, I was captured the entire time, captivated by the animation timing, and skill. And even the simple touch of the start with the hand scrunching up the paper something simple but very effect! I could just keep watching it and I love how they bring the 3D element into it, with the flowers and how it really works and makes it look like the bee is actually moving. The only thing that I struggled wi when creating a mock animation of pitching the idea is the crispness of the frames, I love this animation because it's very clean and crisp maybe I could over come this by scanning in the images?

Tom Rosenthal I like it when you're gone

http://youtu.be/hIzGVlN5QHw

This is a simply drawn animation, but it's so beautiful and effective! And the music/ sound effects yet again really helps create an atmosphere for the animation, so this is something I really need to consider. Thomas said there are many sites where you can get free music which the creator is happy for people to use if they refence them.

Thomas Knowler starting point of inspiration

Thomas Knowler is an illustrator turned animator who gave a talk on his work, what he does and how he creates it. Is passion is drawing, which is a quality that is crucial for animation. He loves to animate space, invests, monsters and pretty much everything else. His work has been show internationally, and one of my favourite animations of his is about bees and how important they are.

www.knowlerdraws.co.uk

thomas@knowlerdrawns.co.uk

His animations captured me, took me to another world and brought his illustrations to life! I had made an animation at a level and really enjoyed it, it's on of those things you can get your teeth stuck into! And the hard work pays off! I also have the patience for animation as you can draw the same thing over and over agin, and I also miss drawing, and creating an animation means drawing a lot!

His work gorge is amazing, there is no talking but the music and sound effects create such an atmosphere and plays a huge roll in putting together the animation

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FOR CREATIVE TYPES lecture notes

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FOR CREATIVE TYPES

David Thompson
Milchelmores

Awareness of rights

When searching on the internet be aware it could be about US law, which is completely different.

## Benefits of managing IP rights
Preventing third parties from stealing your idea
Allows disputes to be swiftly grasped
Creates a competitive edge, gain market position

Need to unstandardised risks, then move forward

## unregistered trade marks
'Badge of origin' tells the consumer where the items have come from.
'Get-up' like colours that relate' size or shApe, these are unregistered so it's harder to
'Tm' denotes unregistered trademark, money hasn't been spent on marking them, uphill struggle trying to asset them.

## Registered trade marks
Registration fees and process for bigger products something that might take off
Uk trade mark £200-£250 shows your serious about intellectual property
You need a good identity that's individual checking there's nothing else named
Territorial Scope' if your wanting to work over seas
Really use them to fight off third parties from stealing your idea
You need to refresh them after 10years

##Copyright##

Automatics right, you create it as you create.
It's tangible
It's original
Displays a degree of skill

#Copyright-extent

Types of work protected by copyright
Artist, literary, sound recordings and films,

#Copyright ownership

First creator

#Copyright duration

Life of author plus 70 years for artwork

# restricted acts
Allows you to prevent people from copying, making any form of adaptation, or just a substantial part of it. But this depends on the work itself.

#permitted acts
Non commercial research and study when acknowledged is fine
But when pitching to a third party, commercial this is tricky.
Incidental inclusion, if you accidentally include a copyrighted piece of work in a photo when talking a photo of something else.
Pastiche and parody

#can an idea be protected?
You can't protect an idea, component of the idea could be assigned intellectual rights, draw something up,put it into writing.

Moral Rights

What happens to the work that you've created for a partner, third party
Righty of paternity
Right of integrity, stops over people messing around with your work once created. This could breach the contract you've made for them, they may have changed it to something different that you wouldn't have created.
Right not to suffer false attribution, the slap someone's name on it instead of yours
In the terms and conditions is May say 'waves any moral rights' YOU DONT WANT THIS

Design Rights

Unregistered protection
It's fine until there's a problem to asset your rights
Covers functional designs, more industrial out puts mass produced products
Deign right could also protect little details on mass produced products
10/15 year durations in the uk

Registered Designs
Gives a better stance as a small business against the bugger businesses. Can be used for 2d and 3d deigns, 25 year protection

Other IP Rights
Domain names, the contract between you and the domain name provider.

Due Diligence

Do your homework, research google searches, IP registries, UK IPO, Companies House/Whois to search for third party domain names.
Commercial and legal analysis, are the any looming danger issues?!
Best/worst/likely outcomes

Territorial Extent
'Worldwide' protection not the useful, focus on your key markets, which might not be on the uk, get a lawyer involved if so. Budget and markets

Creating and Exploiting Characters
If a TV show sells soft toys from it, copyright on the art work, design rights, trade marks.

Commissioned Works
If there's no agreement, the the first owner will be the creator, joint work like a text can be hard to split means that no one owns .
Even if the commissioner pays money the creator still owns , unless there's an agreement.
Be really upfront with the commissioner, do you just want the bear licensee or a license allows you to agree to change it.
Copyright the first owner is trh creator, but the design rights are owned by the commissioner.
Which means the creator and commissioner own part of the rights. Define before who owns what, and what's the price for it.
Licensing or assigning?

If you work for a company they own the rights. If you want to create something that's an extension of what your doing at work, approach your employer first if you wanted to sell it to your employer.

Default Ownership Positions
Collaborative work, little bit of a Pickle of ownership, probs never work collaboratively it's a bit confusing, or make sensible discussions before on who owns what!!!

Enforcement of Rights
Don't be scared to enforce your rights. Get a clear snap shot of what your rights are, don't get your facts wrong. Then be confrontational. If people are ripping you off.
Letter before action ,

Confidentiality/pitch protection
Google pitch protection letter make sure it's uk!
When pitching if someone uses your ideas, and breach of confidence, try doing some research on the people you'll be pitching to. Cos they might be sharks. Even an agreement might not protect you.

Exploitation The basics
Licensing
Indemnities, you have to say that you haven't ripped anyone off. In the uk, but beyond he uk can you be sure?

If you give a ripper offer a solution it may nip it in the bud, maintain all the paper trails, keep them date them, these are your proof of what you've made.
do get legal advice if needed.

Installation / display ??

-Installation Art, requires he audience to play socially enter the artwork, experimental. They actively walk into the space and get submersed but the art. Absorbed

Is it going to be displayed on the floor, wall or shelf?

A collection of work all together on wall, biggest n the middle and working out to smallest on the outside! What colours will the walls be?

Text on gallery walls, gallery guide, something that relates to the work, a noo melt pthat you could take home and read later on, extended labels, audio tour, resources , being there to talk about your work.

Why do people go?

Emotionally moved, to feel different, to escape from your life, like a cinema

Work with the room, does it have a central balance? Is there a pilar that needs to be worked with?

An interactive element, a place where they can leave feedback,

An artist statement, writing about your work, it's important. No waffle, just talk about how you did it, why you did it, this will communicate to the audience the best! Just simply talk about what your dong. Helps to talk it out.

Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead used in different areas in the industry. I absolutely love the pillow of the wedding man and women, they look so fun and happy- I need to remember to bring this into my work. After drawing my first 'skullboy' who looks quite expressionless I need to make his little face smile, he's part of a celebration of life! Something happy! I also love the badges/ biscuits up above, some thing that could be made for the summer show, badges would be cool and you could give out at the show after drawing competitions complete by he general public.

Typography Katie Daisy

I've always loved hand lettering so I'm excited to have he chance to combine it with my illustration for my Summer Show poster, the ultimate hand lettered hand painted illustrator is Katie Daisy I love her work, I'm extremely envious, her work is so beautiful and she knows what colours work and what compositions work! Her typography is also clear, and readable, something that I need to remember, as a poster it needs to be clear, the lettering needs to be clear, and like last year I used decorated lettering but it was still clear enough to read. I also need to decided what quote I'm going to use, it needs to intrigue, and generalise what the summer show is about.
Another really cute little painting from Katie Daisy.

And amazingly she's done her own version of the Day of the Dead sugar skulls! She's made this skull look pretty friendly which is something I need to concentrate on doing! This needs to describe a celebration not a sadness!

Hand Lettering

I love hand lettering and today I was experiementing with ink! I made his beautiful sun colour, which I will probably end up using in the final poster just because it's such a happy lovely colour! My type needs to be bold and understandable! I think I might quote in my poster ' celebration of energy' to link in with the #YourEnergy campaign that the college is running at the moment.

SkullBoy

This is a little character that I drew today! I wanted him to look happy and to represent the colourful celebration of Day of the Dead.

I wanted to combine basic lines with high pattern, so that the image can be  bold but detailed as well. The next step would be to add hand lettering to explain what the poster is advertising and maybe to try a different composition.

Activity Ideas

This biscuit could be something that could be made for the summer show, or could be made. The biscuit could be made, then you could get the general public to decorate them. It could be a fun and interactive and draw people into the college.

Skulls Studies

I'd never drawn skulls before so I did different studies on drawing skulls, initially I drew skulls observationally. Then I started to add my own touch to it. Using ink and decoration patterns to define the skull shape. I used bright cheery colours to change the meaning of the skull, as it's connotations can be quite deathly.

Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead is a very colourful and happy celebration in Mexico where he death of family or friends is celebrated. The artwork that accompanies the festival are so bright and I thought it would be a great theme to use to promote the summer show! As long as the death theme isn't too dark! Which isn't in the festival, it's a happy occasion. I also thought it would be a good theme to use as there are a lot of activities and entertainment that accompanies it such as sugar skulls, Mexican hats, moustaches and loud music!
I absolutely love the Decorated skulls so bright and cheery! Something that I would like to incorporate into my ppster design.

Project IDEA 5 Make and Sell

Probably a bit of a cop out project, but I really want to create some designs to screen on to t-shirts, last year I had so much fun doing this, and really wanted to do it again while I'm still in college. I also would like to get a bit creative with what I print on to, maybe it could be a scarf as a repeat pattern, or a cushion. Something a bit different. I could also focus on pulling together a self promotion pack, making sure it looks unified.

Project IDEA 4 Cheltenham Illustration Awards

This looked like something else that I would be interested in taking part in. The thing that captured my attention was then theme they had set for this year 'being human' I just really like that, I feel its an idea that I want to explore, maybe a person journey as well, as it could be taken like vampires and stuff, but I inter put it as what its like being human, the possible constraints we live in. The pressures we face, but also the joys of being human, how sometimes little things keep us going. I could also bring in a fashion illustration element in, i love to capture people so the theme 'being human' is a prefect chance to do so.

Project IDEA 3 Wedding Drifwood Signs

After completing a small driftwood commission last module I remembered how much i enjoy painting sea wood. I adore the entire process, going to the beach and collecting the wood after a high tide or storm (which there has been a lot of lately) bringing it home and waiting for it to dry (even drying it in my car, which turns out to be a very good place to dry driftwood, just creates a lot of moisture in my car, which isn't so great) then after its dried fully, sanding down them down until they are extremely smooth with no risk of getting any splinters! Then working out the dimensions of the lettering and finding something extremely cute and cuooshy to paint on it, then the best bit- painting. After painting let it dry and varnish it then its all done!
My cousin is getting married this year and has asked me to make some driftwood signs for a wedding, that might have marriagey quotes painted on or they may be used for giving directions to the 'dance floor' or 'toilet'. I thought it could be a good project to include and as I would like to add driftwood to my portfolio would be a good idea to create a big project to give me some space to complete a lovely set.

Project IDEA YCN Bear Competition

I love typography and after researching about different illustrators/artists  that inspired me I kinda remember that I haven't been doing much typography lately. Hand lettering pushing me, I have to focus on creating the letters and making them fit with the illustration. Hand lettering is also quite rewarding, so I definitely want to add an element of it to my portfolio. I also find their packaging really engaging, every time I see it in the shop I want to buy it just so I can keep the packaging! This maybe my first project  because the deadline is soonish, Thursday 27th march, but it might be a cute little project to get me started.

Project IDEA 1 Macmillan Prize

One of my ambitions is to complete a children's book, I've tried several times with smaller projects, but feel this could be the time to take it as a full project. I really want to because Children book illustration make me happy, and I know how rewarding they were reading when I was a child. And also they push me out of my comfort zone. There's this super cool element to children book illustrations which is really hard to grasp, and that is making your drawings look easy, effortless, like you just quickly squiggled it out on the bus, but they really work. Most are simple yet extremely fun and effective. I want to try to achieve this! So I feel this could be my chance. And also if you win you not only get a grand but get the soak in the rewards of being a Macmillan winner!
I think the brief is pretty open, so I could pretty much do my dream book! I would make it simple, a little story that might be adapted of something that happened to me when I was younger. Or just a simple story about something cute that would make kids smile. I teach kids to swim so maybe I could incorporate that too. I think the submission date is the 24th april, and you need to have submitted a 32 page illustrated book with hand lettered or tpyed words, obviously a great opportunity to use my hand lettering!

AD 33 Artist Research Lize Meddings

I've always loved Lize Meddings work ever since year 1, it's just really cute and approachable and fun for a lot a wide audience. It's just so friendly and I love with her comics how she deals with everyday stories that you can relate to. She works in a similuar way to me technique wise, I think she finds a lovely balance between digital and traditional. Her little people and animals are full of character and it always reminds me how much you can get across with simply. I would love to create work like hers as I think she's just started selling work at no guts no glory which is a pretty cool shop to get you work in.

AD 33 Artist Research Kelly Smith

Kelly Smith lives and works in Australia , and has produced work for Vogue Australia. She is one of my favourite illustrators, her work is beautiful and striking. It really captures the fashion styles. And I love the use of black and white with a sllight dash of colour is realy effective!

AD 33 Gabriel Moreno

Gabriel Moreno is a Illustrator, engraver and painter, and I've loved his work ever since I brought the book Illustration Now, with its famous illustration on the front on it. His work is stunning. It captures movement with colour and technique. He works in a zone that I cant even imagine!

His client list is endless. And  he combines illustration with photography which I love doing. His choice of colour and composition is beautiful. Work found at www.gabrielmoreno.com

AD 33 Artist Research Lisa Buckridge

Lisa creates patterns, editorial illustration, children's book illustrations, surface pattern who has just completed an MA in illustration. She creates such cute and entertaining work for a mixed of people, her animal portraits her full of character and her patterned scarves are an amazing contribution to her portfolio. Shes another artist that loves working in traditional techniques, probably because I love working in watercolours and line work. Her work is within my comfort zone, maybe not the subject she draws but the way she works, I love it!
I  love creating a shape with patterns, and shes done this beautifully with cute little lady bugs. i love the composition, colour and style. You can find her work at www.lisabuckridge.com or on her blog or on her facebook.

AD 33 Artist Research Rebecca Green

Rebecca Green is a freelance illustrator, gallery artist and stop-motion dabbler. Hey clients consist of Wall Street Journal, Flow Magazine, Thriving Family, Minnesota Monthly, Kendall College of Art and Design, Amtrak, Bitch Magazine, CraftSanity Magazine, Grand Rapids Community College, and Sparrows Coffee Tea and Newsstand. Rebecca Green reminds me to keep the idea of creating children's illustration, hers are so stylized and beautiful. Her images are so detailed and imaginative which must be inspiring for children to observe and read.  She inspires me to use colours, as some times I'm afraid that my colour choice doesn't work, and then I try to just work in black and white and slowly introduce colour. I love the texture is creates with the traditional techniques she uses.
Her work can be found at www.myblankpaper.com above is a poster for a festival, accompanied with lovely hand letters text. it really compliments her work.I love the colours and the characters she creates, they are wonderful! This way of working is differently out of my comfort zone, and I have tried to produce childrens book illustrations before with background but I found it hard creating a composition. But I do love it though, and I differently get inspired by what I see with Greens work.

AD 33 Artist Research Katie Daisy

Katie Daisy is a freelance illustrator who graduated in Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2009. She mainly creates her work with watercolour and acrylic, which are one of my top techniques to use, which is why I really appreciated her work! The typography is beautifully formed with amazing colours, and flowers to accompany. Her clients consist of Target, Hallmark, American Greetings, Pottery Barn, Oopsy Daisy, Papyrus, Madison Park Greetings, Sellers Publishing, Orange Circle Studio, Studio M, Magnetworks, Paper Wings, Hay House Publishing. Katie Daisy's work can be brought as notebook covers, Card designs, wall art, iphone cases, tape designs and even t shirt designs. Her work communicates to a similar audience that I would like my work to. I would love to create artwork like this, and it reminds me to add a typography project into the next module because I really do enjoy it but always forget about it!It will help to add a different element to my portfolio.

Katie Daisy's work can be found; www.katiedaisy.com, I also see the importance of photographing work like this instead of just scans of the work because it represents the work better, and also adding objects such as flowers can indicate for the viewer the size of the products. Her work is so intricate and cute, I really love it, its really inspirational.
